David Austin
Beautiful at all stages, bearing small clusters of mid pink, medium-large, cupped rosettes. They have a strong, delicious myrrh and heather honey fragrance. David Austin introduced Strawberry Hill rose for the UK in 2006. He named this rose after Strawberry Hill, a house built in Twickenham, London by Horatio Walpole (24 September 1717 – 2 March 1797). He was an English writer and Art historian. Moreover, he is the youngest son of British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole.
David Austin is an extremely prolific shrub rose breeder. At the moment, he is supplying about 109 shrub-rose varieties, while there are only about 18 David Austin climbing roses. However, when he introduces a new climbing rose, more often than not, it must be an incredible one. The team at The Right Roses believe that Strawberry Hill is one of the best David Austin climbing roses.

Strawberry Hill rose has 3 strengths.
First, he is a multiple-award-winning rose. As you see can see the list above, he has won 4 prestigious awards so far, such as RHS Garden of Merit Award. As far as we are aware, Strawberry Hill rose must be among those David Austin roses that won the largest number of awards. For instance, The Generous Gardener (2 awards), Port Sunlight (1 award), Golden Celebration (3 awards), Lady Emma Hamilton (2 awards), Gertrude Jekyll (4 awards), Munstead Wood (4 awards).
Second, he produces such a strong and tasty fragrance. David Austin ranked his fragrance as “strong”. In addition, as you can see, he has won two awards for his beautiful scent: Prix d’Honneur at the fragrance trials in Nantes, France and Gold medal at the 4th Echigo Fragrance Competition in Japan.
Third, Strawberry Hill blooms are just breathtakingly gorgeous. You just can not put a price tag on a Strawberry Hill rose in full bloom. In fact, it is priceless and too hard to describe. Therefore, he will bring an endless amount of happiness to you for years to come.
Strawberry Hill rose: The cons
Strawberry Hill rose has 4 weaknesses.
First, his disease resistance should only be between ‘average’ and ‘good’, not absolutely ‘excellent’. He is still susceptible to diseases such as black spot.
Second, Strawberry Hill reblooms alright. Nonetheless, he is not one of those varieties which are best for flowering. David Austin has introduced 2 climbing roses and 1 rambling rose, being best for flowering, including: Mortimer Sackler, Iceberg, and Malvern Hills.
For your information, David Austin has introduced some extremely floriferous shrub roses, including Harlow Carr, Olivia Rose Austin, Princess Anne, Thomas a Becket, Gabriel Oak (2019), Kew Gardens, William & Catherine, Lady of Shalott, and Roald Dahl.
Third, he cannot tolerate shade well. He needs to be in the full sunlight.
And, fourth, he produces a lot of arching canes. Therefore, you would have to spend a lot of time time pruning him to keep him in a good shape.
Strawberry Hill rose: The similarities
As we mentioned above, David Austin has introduced many terrific climbing roses.
First, Claire Austin is also one of the top David Austin roses. She is such a healthy rose with a strong fragrance. Furthermore, she can tolerate shade as well.
Second, Wollerton Old Hall produces gorgeous and quite large blooms (slightly bigger than those of Claire Austin). Moreover, its fragrance is also strong. And, it can tolerate shade.
Third, Crown Princess Margareta is a wonderful climbing rose. She can tolerate shade. Her fragrance is very tasty, while it is only medium-strong.

Thank you so much for your excellent advice and reviews on David Austin roses. I’m new to gardening and in particular, rose gardening and your site has been enormously helpful. I have a small garden in the South of France with 5 French/Italian roses with which I am disappointed. They grow well in this climate but are wild and prone to disease and insect infestations. I ordered Three David Austin this year in March and May as bare-root and they arrived in impeccable shape and have taken off with one of the climbers growing 8 feet all around and full… Read more »

Dear RightRoses team,
is the Strawberry Hill rose heat tolerant? South facing garden, Germany, Zone 7b, direct sunlight in the summer 9 hours. The Europian summer is getting really, really hot…
Best wishes,
Vladimir
Dear Vladimir,
Strawberry Hill is such a beautiful rose. We think that she would perform well in full sun. We have seen that she did very well in the hot summer in California. So, she should do well in that spot.
Please share with us your rose experience with SH in a few months.
Best wishes,
The Right Roses
