English Shrub Rose bred by David Austin

David Austin

An exceptionally beautiful rose with distinctive neat, flat blooms. Each bloom is a lovely soft pink, the smaller central petals deepening to rich apricot and surrounding deep-set stamens. The strong Tea scent becomes more Old Rose, with delicious hints of lemon and grapefruit. It forms a bushy shrub with strong, healthy, upright growth. Named for the Brontë Society to celebrate the bicentenary of the novelist’s birth. David Austin, 2018.

The Right Roses:

David Austin introduced Emily Bronte rose for the UK in 2018. David Austin named one of their new roses after the famous novelist, Emily Brontë, after receiving a request from The Brontë Society – one of the oldest literacy societies in the world.

Emily Bronte rose is a fabulous David Austin introduction. She has so many great traits. In recent years, David Austin did a wonderful job, introducing many fabulous roses, such as Emily Bronte (2018), The Mill On The Floss (2018)Eustacia Vye rose (2019) and Gabriel Oak (2019).

Emily Bronte rose: The pros

  • Best for fragrance

Emily Bronte rose is one of the most fragrant David Austin varieties. David Austin included Emily Bronte in the group of popular varieties in terms of perfume such as Gabriel Oak (2019), Harlow Carr, The Generous Gardener, Princess Alexandra of Kent, or Gertrude Jekyll. As a gardener, who always looks for absolutely every possible detail of fragrance first when seeing a new rose, to me, Emily Bronte is just like a dream, coming true!

Emily Bronte has a delicious fragrance with hints of lemon, grapefruit, and guava. I am so over the moon, just imagining dipping my nose into Emily Bronte blooms in a summer afternoon.

Emily Bronte rose produces incredibly charming, soft-pink blooms. The central petals are rich apricot, which makes each bloom so unique. Her blooms are large (3.5’’ – 5’’ or 9 – 12 cm) and incredibly well repeated. We have planted so many David Austin roses. And, we have been extremely impressed with how floriferous Emily Bronte is. Extremely productive!

David Austin 2019/2020 Handbook for Roses  suggested that Emily Bronte is not one of the top David Austin roses for flowering. However, we believe that  this is a huge under-statement. Emily Bronte is incredibly florifeous. Our little Emily Bronte is being covered with so many blooms!

Emily Bronte is a wonderfully healthy rose. Her ability to resist diseases makes our lives as gardeners a lot easier. David Austin rated her disease resistance as “Excellent”. If you need an example of how an unhealthy rose can do for you, please try to grow Souvenir du Docteur Jamain rose. Alternatively, you can read my review about him.

In addition, Emily Bronte rose can take a little bit of shade. However, as many David Austin roses, it would be best if you could grow her where she gets at least 4 hours of sun a day.

Emily Bronte is a medium sized bush (4ft height x 3.5 ft spread). She can do very well in rose hedges, rose border (not front border), and mixed border.

Finally, Emily Bronte rose can tolerate poor soil. Although this is certainly a positive characteristic, probably not many of us would make our beloved roses hungry for food.

Emily Bronte rose: The cons

Emily Bronte is such a wonderful English rose. She has almost no weakness.

If we have to pick up one weakness or two, it is her bloom size. David Austin suggested that her bloom size is large (3.5’’ – 5’’ or 9 – 12.5 cm). However, in the first couple of years, it would be more precise to describe her bloom size as ‘medium’ (2 – 3.5” or 5 – 9 cm). Nonetheless, her bloom size can improve as she ages.

Next, her color fades to almost white as the blooms age. Moreover, under heat, her blooms may not be able to retain her delicate soft-pink color. Therefore, those gardeners in warmer climates, such as in California, should make sure that they would not mind if the color of their precious Emily Bronte remarkably fades.

I love every rose with apricot colour. Do you think in hot weather, it will be apricot or pale yellow instead? Thanks team

Thank you Becky for your comment. I think the color can fade in a hot climate. If you live in the Europe, I think it would be fine.
