WOLLERTON OLD HALL ROSE REVIEW | THE RIGHT ROSES
English Climbing Rose bred by David Austin
“A wonderfully fragrant climber – its strong, warm myrrh fragrance has intense hints of citrus. The buds have attractive flashes of red, open to beautifully rounded, chalice-shaped blooms of pale apricot, eventually paling to cream. Named for one of the most beautiful private gardens in the country. DavidﾠAustin, 2011”.

Overall, Wollerton Old Hall is a wonderful rose variety. Probably, Wollerton Old Hall must be the most all-round and elegant climbing rose that David Austin has ever introduced. If you would like to find a comparable DA shrub rose variety, that would be Jude The Obscure. Not surprisingly, Jude The Obscure is also one of the finest David Austin shrub roses.

Wollerton Old Hall rose: The pros
When I first try to get to know about a new rose, I would like to learn about her fragrance, color, bloom form, repeat flowering, disease resistance, and shrub form. Wollerton Old Hall rose would get the perfect scores on almost all those dimensions.
In terms of fragrance strength, Gertrude Jekyll climbing rose can be better than Wollerton Old Hall. However, not many David Austin roses can be compared with Gertrude Jekyll climbing rose. Wollerton Old Hall rose still produces one of the most attractive fragrance among David Austin climbing roses. She has a strong Myrrh fragrance with very clear hints of citrus. Therefore, you really cannot ask for anything more when sitting under Wollerton Old Hall with a cup of coffee in the morning.
Some gardeners said that they can only smell a light scent. Nonetheless, as other David Austin varieties, it may take a few years for DA roses to be established. Furthermore, the fragrance strength may also change according to the weather and temperature. It varies even across different times in a day! I would suggest you plant her next to the door or window. When you open the window, her delightful, warm and strong fragrance will just fill your home.
The color of Wollerton Old Hall rose really cannot get any better! It is an elegant peachy cream shade. She lasts very well in the vase as well. Her blooms look a bit similar to Jude The Obscure. However, Jude The Obscure gives larger blooms than Wollerton Old Hall. In addition, Jude The Obscure blooms have a shade of yellow cream. She also reminds me of another favorite rose of mine, Royal Jubilee. In the UK climate, she is a gorgeous rose. In hot regions such as some States in the US, her blooms can fade to cream and white.
Wollerton Old Hall rose is very productive climbing rose. She blooms very well, even just a few months in the ground. She is also a very healthy rose, without any sight of diseases. Moreover, I also love her so much because of her ability to tolerate shade.
Wollerton Old Hall rose: The cons
Other than the fading color in heat, Wollerton Old Hall has one more drawback, which is her shape. As she is very vigorous, she has quite a few octopuses’ canes that many gardeners are not fond of. She flops all over the place. So, you may need to put her canes in order every now and then.
