CLAIRE AUSTIN ROSE REVIEW | THE RIGHT ROSES
English Climbing Rose and English Standard Tree Rose bred by David Austin
This vigorous, upright rose makes a very good climber in both beauty and performance. It bears pleasingly cupped, pale lemon buds which gradually open to large, creamy white flowers, the outer petals perfectly arranged in concentric circles. They have a strong myrrh fragrance with dashes of meadowsweet, vanilla and heliotrope. The growth is strong and particularly healthy, and it is clothed in attractive matt green foliage. Named for the daughter of David Austin Senior. DavidﾠAustin, 2007.
The Right Roses: RightRoses.com
David Austin introduced Claire Austin for the UK in 2007. He named this rose after her daughter, Claire Austin. Recently, Claire Austin opened her own nursery, proudly offering the UK’s finest collection of irises, peonies and day lilies.
Claire Austin is among the best David Austin’s climbing roses. She has a few weaknesses here and there. Nonetheless, Claire Austin is still one of the finest climbing roses that David Austin has introduced to date. Our children are the very best thing that has happened to us. Therefore, frankly speaking, you probably don’t name your worst roses after your daughter, do you?
“Claire Austin is still one of the finest climbing roses that David Austin has introduced”.

Claire Austin rose has six main strengths.
First, she is absolutely one of the best David Austin climbing roses. Overall, she is also among the best David Austin roses so far, not only being limited to climbing roses. If you are still not entirely convinced, please take a look at the list of all the characteristics above that David Austin rated her best for. Claire Austin rose are among the very best at 10 dimensions, such as best for fragrance, best for health, best for north walls, and so on. Gardeners usually consider Olivia Rose Austin as the finest David Austin rose for being so floriferous and healthy. However, Olivia Rose Austin is only among the best at only 9 dimensions. The team at The Right Roses believe that only the number of the characteristics for which she is best, would seriously beg you for your keen consideration!
Second, Claire Austin rose is one of the most fragrant David Austin roses. David Austin included her in his prestigious list of the most strongly scented roses. In terms of the strong fragrance, Claire Austin can really compete with the very best, such as Gabriel Oak (2019), Emily Bronte (2018), Harlow Carr, The Generous Gardener, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Gertrude Jekyll, Desdemona, R.Rugosa Alba, Summer Song, Charles Darwin, and The Poet’s Wife.
For your information, it is incredibly rare that a climbing rose can be as fragrant as shrub roses. Climbing roses are usually famous for their size (coverage) and the relatively larger number of blooms rather than the beauty of each single bloom and the strength of their fragrance. Therefore, only three climbing roses can make their way into the list of David Austin’s most scented roses, including Claire Austin, Gertrude Jekyll, and The Generous Gardener. Gertrude Jekyll is both a shrub rose and climbing rose. Therefore, Claire Austin is quite special in this sense.
Third, Claire Austin produces very gorgeous, creamy white blooms with a peach hint in the middle. As of 2019, David Austin has introduced totally 18 climbing rose varieties. Claire Austin is the only white David Austin climbing rose. The Generous Gardener is the closest alternative. However, it has a shade of pale pink, not creamy white as Claire Austin. Therefore, if you want a white David Austin climbing rose, Claire Austin must be the right rose for your garden.
Fourth, Claire Austin is such a healthy rose. In fact, according to David Austin Handbook of Roses 2019/2020, Claire Austin is one of the healthiest David Austin roses. He rated Claire Austin as one having ‘excellent’ disease resistance. In your garden, generally, you would no problem with black spots. This is particularly a big help, in fact, a dream for most gardeners.
Fifth, Claire Austin can tolerate shade quite well. She can thrive in spots which have only about 4 hours of sun. Like Wollerton Old Hall, in fact, that is the ideal location for Claire Austin. They both love those spots which are not too deep-shade or too sunny. Their blooms last longer and become most gorgeous in those spots.
Sixth, Claire Austin can tolerate poor soil well. As a result, she really can thrive with a small level of effort. She is the right rose for those people who live a busy life.
Claire Austin rose: The cons
Claire Austin rose has five weaknesses.
First, her blooms do not last very long. In general, they last only about 2 days, which is quite similarly a few other David Austin roses such as The Mill On The Floss (2018) or Royal Jubilee. Some of us would really love those rose varieties which have a good stem or vase life so that we could enjoy them as cut flowers. In addition, some hate the deadheading job. So, it is unfortunate that Claire Austin blooms do not last long. Therefore, she is not a great rose as a cut flower.
Second, Claire Austin bloom size is quite small. David Austin rated her bloom size as ‘medium’ (2 – 3.5’’ or 5 – 9 cm). However, the team at The Right Roses believe that it would be more precise to describe her bloom size as ‘small-medium’ (1 – 3.5’’ or 2.5 – 9 cm). The team at The Right Roses think that both Wollerton Old Hall climbing rose and The Generous Gardener climbing produce larger blooms than Claire Austin.
Third, Claire Austin does not take heat very well. So, those of you living in warmer climates such as California should think twice when considering her. She would be absolutely gorgeous in cooler climates such as in Europe, Canada, or States such as Illinois. Under heat, her blooms could shatter very quickly (about 2 days).
Fourth, Claire Austin is not a prolific bloomer. She is not a stingy bloomer either. She reblooms quite well. However, she is at somewhere in the middle, not being very prolific or stingy.
Fifth, Claire Austin need enough water to look great. Her white blooms would look quite unattractive if they dry off.
Claire Austin rose: The similarities
David Austin has introduced a few wonderful climbing roses along with Claire Austin such as Wollerton Old Hall, Crown Princess Margareta, and The Generous Gardener.
Wollerton Old Hall climbing rose produces very beautiful pale apricot blooms. Its fragrance is strong and very tasty. However, like Claire Austin, it does not take heat very well.
Crown Princess Margareta climbing can take both heat and shade. She is such a wonderful, wonderful climbing rose! The blooms are large. Her fragrance is ‘medium-strong’. Her color is rich apricot-orange. Her disease resistance is very good in our garden, although David Austin only rated her disease resistance as ‘average’. Her blooms last well both on stems and in vase. Again, such a fabulous climbing rose! You can also plant her as a shrub. Sometimes we run out of words when describing David Austin roses. This is one of those times.
The Generous Gardener produces just a stunning strong and beautiful fragrance! You just cannot stop getting closer to her and sniffing her blooms.
Please do not ask me to choose the best roses among these four: Wollerton Old Hall, Crown Princess Margareta, The Generous Gardener, and Claire Austin. They are just wonderful masterpieces which would give you the incredible joy for years to come.
